Gospel Reading – Matthew 6:7-15

Jesus said to his disciples: “In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them.

Your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “This is how you are to pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

“If you forgive men their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”

Reflection:

In Matthews Gospel today we are given the pattern of all prayers, the ‘Our Father’ notice this line Your Father knows what you need before you ask him”. However, Jesus goes on to tell his disciples when you pray, pray like this; Our Father………………………when we pray this prayer Jesus is asking us to think about what were saying and what we are asking for? There can be a feeling I want this so therefore I should get it? or I need that, why wont you give it to me?

Its back to this line Your Father knows what you need before you ask him”. We don’t always receive what we ask for because it may not be what the Father wants to give us and then we say, what’s the point of praying? Or you could say if Our Father knows what we need why do we have to pray? I would say its more to do with Trust and Humility I believe its in these two words that we find the meaning of PRAYER!

  • Is there Trust and Humility in the humbleness of your PRAYER
