Gospel: Luke 10:38-42
Jesus entered a village
where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary
who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
“Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
Tell her to help me.”
The Lord said to her in reply,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her.”

Reflection:
In today’s Gospel, Jesus was welcomed into the house of Martha and Mary. Both sisters attended to Jesus differently. Martha was busy serving the Lord. Mary sat by the feet of Jesus listening to Him. Each of us have our way of treating our guests. While some of us would be engaged in making them comfortable in our home, some of us would have a conversation with them. Neither of these are wrong. Jesus did not say Martha was wrong and Mary was right. In following Jesus, we need to be both a Martha and a Mary. We need to be engaged with our work in spreading God’s message of love to all. Without any engagement with the community, our faith would be lifeless. However, we also need to take time to listen to the Lord, in prayer and reflecting His Word. Without devoting time for such, we may not be well equipped in our work in the Lord’s vineyard. We need to be rooted on fertile soil lest stress, trials, and worries of the world overwhelm us.
- In your Christian living, are you a Martha or a Mary?
- How do you strike a balance between being an active and a contemplative Christian?
- How do you keep yourself rooted in the Lord especially during this time of pandemic?
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your Word today. Through the prayers and example of Martha and Mary, guide us in becoming Your authentic followers – actively involved in Your mission and passionately rooted in Your love. Amen.
Sincerely,
Pietro
