Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.  And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.  I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Who do people say Jesus is today? is he a myth, a legend, no one important, a nobody who died two thousand years ago.

When Jesus asked his followers, “who do people say I am?” I am sure it was a bit of a rhetorical question, he must have been aware of all the whispers and rumours surrounding him, but he goes on to say, “ But who do you say I am ? “the important word here is BUT Jesus is telling his disciples that we cannot base our lives on someone else’s proclamation, we must decide and state our own belief.  Jesus is saying, it does not matter what others say but what do you say?  When you get to the pearly gates St Peter isn’t going to be impressed if you say, “She said this or he said do this and so I followed them” who do you say I am, what do you believe, cast aside everyone else’s answer and seek the answer in your own soul.  Jesus is asking you now who do you say I am , who do you show me to be, am I your Lord and Saviour, or just a man who died on a tree?

Show me!!
