Gospel thought for Thursday 10th December Second Week of Advent

Gospel – Matthew 11:11-15

Truly I tell you among those born of women no-one has arisen greater than John the Baptist yet the least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than He.  From the days of John the Baptist until now the Kingdom of Heaven has suffered violence and the violence take it by force.  For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John came and if you are willing to accept it he is Alijah who is to come.  Let anyone with ears listen!

Reflection:

Our Gospel today presents, the problem with this generation, Jesus says, is that they listen neither to John nor to Jesus. John’s austere lifestyle led people to accuse him of having a demon, while Jesus’ habit of eating and drinking with sinners earned him a bad reputation.

This generation finds reason to take offense at both John and Jesus and thus to evade the call of both. They are like children in the marketplace who cannot decide whether they want to play wedding games or funeral games and end up playing neither.

  • Many of those Jesus preached to found his message too much for them. It was too unexpected, too much of a challenge.
  • Is there any area of my life where God is calling me beyond my comfort zone?
