Gospel – Mark 8:11-13
The Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, asking him for a sign from heaven, to test him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign?
Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.” And he left them, and getting into the boat again, he went across to the other side.

Reflection:
My friends in Saint Mark’s Gospel today we get significant little details about Jesus, not mentioned in the other gospels. Here, the remark that “he sighed deeply in his spirit” indicates an understandable frustration on the part of Jesus. He had been giving all sorts of “signs” since the day he changed water into wine at Cana. Yet none of these seem to have made any sort of favourable impression on the Pharisees.
And yet here they are once again looking for their own tailor-made miracle from heaven. This is not how Jesus did things. Those for whom He worked miracles were poor, needy, suffering men and women with no axe to grind. They simply wanted healing. If we bring our deeply felt needs to Jesus, we can be sure of a helpful response.
