Gospel: John 16:29-33
The disciples said to Jesus,
“Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech.
Now we realize that you know everything
and that you do not need to have anyone question you.
Because of this we believe that you came from God.”
Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now?
Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived
when each of you will be scattered to his own home
and you will leave me alone.
But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
I have told you this so that you might have peace in me.
In the world you will have trouble,
but take courage, I have conquered the world.”

Reflection:
In today’s Gospel, Jesus assured His followers that He is not alone, that He is in control because “the Father is with me”. This is good news for all of us, especially those who have or are suffering persecution of any kind. Despite the world’s rejection and hatred of Jesus, the Lord has conquered the world. Such triumph has made many Christians through the ages bear witness for the faith.
In her letter to her sister Celine, St Therese of Lisieux wrote: “God is admirable, but He is especially lovable; let us love Him, then, let us love Him enough to suffer for Him all that He wills, even spiritual pains, aridities, anxieties, apparent coldnes…But, one day, a grateful God will cry out: “Now, my turn.” If you feel down, know well that the Father is also with you!
- How easy is it for you to love God despite the pains that He allows you to experience?
- How can you affirm the faith of fellow Christians, especially those who are doubtful or downcast?
- How do you keep yourself calm in a busy and stressful day?
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your Word today. Remind our weary hearts to rest in You, our only source of courage and peace. Amen.
