11th Week in Ordinary Time Gospel Thoughts 2020
My dear friends,
In these coming weeks as we wait in joyful hope for the opening of our churches for private prayer, let us enter ever more deeply in to the word of God in this the Year of the ‘God who Speaks’.
Through sacred Scripture God is always speaking to his people. And while we continue to try and make sense of our world at this strange and difficult time we need to recall the many difficulties our Christian brothers and Sisters endured in their struggle to keep the Gospel alive through their trials and tribulations. Look at our sisters and brothers around the world who struggle daily in trying to access the sacraments let us take courage from them and unite our struggles with theirs, at this time of pandemic. In God we trust for a brighter future!

Gospel Reading – Matthew 5:38-42
Jesus said to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil.
When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.”

Reflection
In the Gospel from Saint Matthew, Jesus tells us to always turn the other cheek. If only it was that simple? It’s though when you are asked to give your tunic and then, your coat? My friends, the cost of being a disciple of Jesus, is no pain no gain?
Loving, praying for, and forgiving one’s enemy is an extension of Jesus’ broader teaching about the perfection of God. In typical fashion, Jesus provides an intriguing image to capture the meaning of this quality of God, one that God’s followers should emulate.
- How do you emulate the teaching of Jesus?
