Gospel – Matthew 13:18-23

Jesus said to his disciples: “Hear the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the Kingdom without understanding it, and the Evil One comes and steals away what was sown in his heart.

The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away.

The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirty fold.”

Reflection:

Matthew in his Gospel today takes us back to the parable of the sower, which we heard last Sunday. We are called on to be the rich soil in which the seed fell and produced a rich harvest.

We are reminded to take a look at ourselves from time to time in order that we can take stock and see what needs to change and what work do we need to do for that change to take place. May be there might be a bit of weeding that needs doing in order for new growth to take place, or we may need watering and nurturing.

Whatever it may be we need to do let us not neglect it because if we do it could reduce our faith and separate us from the love of God and we do not want that to happen!

  • Does listening lead to the deep understanding of God’s Word or does it remain only an intellectual exercise?
