Reflection. For Tuesday 3rd November

Gospel-Luke 14: 15-24

A man prepared a meal and it must have been a big affair, but then his Master sent out his servants to bring the guests into the feast.

But to his surprise  the guests excused themselves, the first says, “Hold me excused I have bought a field and I am just going to evaluate it”, the second guest said, “ I have bought five yoke of oxen and I am about to inspect them”, the third one came up  with the excuse of having just married, and he obviously wanted to be somewhere else.

The servant  reported to his Master what had happened and the Master told him to bring in from the street uninvited guests who took the place of those who had been invited, but the servant explained that he had already done so.

The Master then told him to go to the highways  and hedgerows to bring the lame, the crippled, and the blind in order to take the place of the invited guests, and he told the servant that none of the invited guests would be invited for a later meal.

Which leaves us with the question why was the master offended at the refusal of his invited guests  to come.

After all most people spend their day in ordinary occupations,  so is this parable teaching us that we should seek the things from above in preference for the day to day doings.

In the Catechism we read the following:

We are here on earth in order to know and to love God, to do good according to his will, and to go someday to heaven. ( 1-2, 358 ).
