Gospel Thought for Today 30th May The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee,
to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.
When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.
Then Jesus approached and said to them,
“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Reflection:

Fr Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, a prolific Dominican theologian and spiritual writer, wrote: “The greatest proof of love is the perfect gift of self.” Indeed, we witness this in the people around us: parents, teachers, front liners, missionaries, etc. Ultimately, God – who is Love – gives Himself to us without any reservation. Fr Garrigiou-Langrange commented that the Father could have just sent a prophet to proclaim His conditions for forgiveness. Instead, He sent His only Son to redeem us. Jesus, for His part, totally gave Himself through His ministry, at the Last Supper, and on Calvary. Finally, the Spirit continues to animate the Church, sanctify believers, and inspire us all to be another Jesus in the world.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus instructs His disciples to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”. We are one of those new disciples. We are one of those initiated into the Church in the name of the Most Holy Trinity. Baptized in God’s Name, let us mirror His perfect gift of self in the way we relate with others.

  • How do you show your love for God and others?
  • How do selfishness, pride, and prejudice hinder the unity of our parish?
  • What does being baptized “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” mean to you? Why?

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your Word today. Help us to love as You have loved us so that we too can go out and make disciples of the people we meet.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
